CM asked:

What if someone does not want to get the help to stop using drugs and instead claim that they can do it on their own? Is that possible? I would like to get some success stories with and without help. Thanks

  1. Not impossibe but not likely at all…you are missing the point. rehab provides the addict with education and information about the effects of drugs on the body and mind…if you don’t understand how drugs effect the neurotransmission process as well as the blood cells then the addict will continue on in the madness. The person should call a Methadone clinic and get on board as a patient. A meth clinic will provide methadone treatment, regular hiv, hep a and b, std and blood work checkups…as well as 1 to 1 counseling.

  2. Not an expert on shooting up but I guess it would depend on how long. I would say yes you could do it without rehab depending on how much you wanted to. Cold turkey…perhaps it would be better if you had a friend with you someone who wasn’t ‘shootin up’ Perhaps having a smoke might help. Not alcohol, don’t think that would help but lots of water, nice, comfy, safe environment. The most important thing would be having the determination to get of the horrible stuff and get back to having a life without something destroying your life.

  3. CM, Drug addiction can be very serious. Many everyday people have lost jobs, friends, and loved ones because they could not tame thier drug habits. I recommend you find some help. I found a site that has addiction information and a directory of addiction treatment centers so you can help.

    Get healthy!

  4. Even if you have support, you’re really on your own when it comes to quitting an addiction.

    On their own
There is a high rate of recovery among alcoholics and addicts, treated and untreated. According to one estimate, heroin addicts break the habit in an average of 11 years. Another estimate is that at least 50% of alcoholics eventually free themselves although only 10% are ever treated. One recent study found that 80% of all alcoholics who recover for a year or more do so on their own, some after being unsuccessfully treated. When a group of these self-treated alcoholics was interviewed, 57% said they simply decided that alcohol was bad for them. Twenty-nine percent said health problems, frightening experiences, accidents, or blackouts persuaded them to quit. Others used such phrases as “Things were building up” or “I was sick and tired of it.” Support from a husband or wife was important in sustaining the resolution.
